Countertops are a daily-use surface and a big visual choice. The three most common options trade off durability, maintenance, and price in different ways.
The main contenders
- Quartz (engineered stone): hard, non-porous, and low-maintenance — no sealing, resists stains. Can be damaged by high heat, so use trivets.
- Granite (natural stone): heat-resistant and unique in pattern, but porous — it needs periodic sealing to resist stains.
- Laminate: affordable and available in many looks, but less heat- and scratch-resistant and hard to repair if damaged.
How to choose. Want low maintenance? Quartz. Love natural stone and don't mind sealing? Granite. Watching the budget? Laminate. Match the surface to how hard your kitchen actually gets used.
