How to Get Spills and Stains Out of Carpet

Most carpet stains come out if you act fast and resist the urge to scrub. The two biggest mistakes people make are rubbing the spot (which pushes the stain deeper and frays the fibers) and reaching for the strongest cleaner they own (which can bleach or set the stain).

The basic method

A few specifics

Greasy spills respond to a small amount of dish soap. Coffee, wine, and juice often lift with the vinegar-water approach. Pet accidents usually need an enzyme cleaner made for the job, because it breaks down the odor source rather than masking it.

Know your fiber. Wool and some natural fibers react badly to high-alkaline or oxygen cleaners. Check the manufacturer's care guidance for your specific carpet before using anything stronger than soap and water.
